The Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences at Georgia College & State University invites applications for a tenure track position in Biology. We seek a specialist in vertebrate physiology with expertise in cellular and molecular techniques or bioinformatics. The primary teaching responsibility will be vertebrate physiology, with other teaching opportunities including core curriculum (non-majors) and lower level biology courses for majors as well as upper level undergraduate and graduate courses in the candidate's areas of expertise. Teaching responsibilities will include 12 contact hours/semester. The candidate will be expected to develop an independent research program, to include undergraduate and graduate students in the research, especially students interested in biomedical careers. Faculty are expected to mentor students in presentation and publication. Travel for professional development purposes is expected. We seek a highly trained individual who is committed to liberal arts education, can demonstrate excellence in teaching and research, possesses the ability and commitment to work with a culturally diverse student, faculty and staff population, and who is willing to collaborate with other faculty in research, curriculum development and other areas of faculty responsibility. This tenure track position will begin 1 August 2018. There are two undergraduate majors within the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences. We currently have 26 full time faculty members in the department with about 440 undergraduate biology majors, 100 environmental science majors, and an MS program in biology with approximately 30 students pursuing thesis and non-thesis degrees. For more information about the department visit us at Knowledge/Skills and Abilities: Ability to teach introductory biology courses, and contribute to the core curriculum and upper division courses in area of specialization (eg vertebrate physiology at the cellular and molecular level). Ability to engage undergraduates and graduates in research. Ability to work collegially and effectively with university students, faculty, and staff as well as the surrounding community. Demonstrable ability to work collegially and effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds. Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. preferred (ABD with Ph.D. completed by August 1st, 2018 will be considered) in Biological Sciences or related field. Research experience (demonstrated by publication record). Undergraduate teaching experience. Must meet SACSCOC accreditation requirements stated in CS 3.7.1 (www.sacscoc.org (faculty credentials)) Preferred Qualifications: We are particularly interested in candidates who can teach vertebrate physiology at the cellular and molecular level as well other upper division courses in their area of specialization. Molecular and cell biological approaches in research are desirable. Ability to teach bioinformatics and use in research is a plus. At least one year of experience teaching college-level courses.
